Cypress
by Cypress.io · Framework · also known as Cypress.io
End-to-end and component testing framework that runs tests inside the browser with an interactive runner, paired with the commercial Cypress Cloud
Overview
Cypress is a JavaScript testing framework for end-to-end and component tests developed by Cypress.io. Unlike out-of-process automation tools, Cypress executes test code in the same browser run loop as the application, which gives it direct access to the DOM, network layer and application state, and powers its interactive runner that shows each command, DOM snapshot and request as a test executes. Tests are written in JavaScript or TypeScript with a chainable command API and automatic retries of assertions.
The open-source application is MIT-licensed and free to run locally or in CI. Cypress Cloud, the company's hosted service, adds parallelization across CI machines, flake detection, test analytics and recorded runs on a freemium basis. Cypress supports Chromium-based browsers, Firefox and WebKit (the last experimentally), and component testing for React, Vue, Angular and Svelte. Its architectural choice brings limitations: tests are bound to a single browser tab and origin per test with some workarounds, multi-tab scenarios are not supported, only JavaScript is available as a language, and parallel execution without the Cloud requires custom orchestration.
Capabilities
- In-browser test execution with an interactive runner
- Time-travel debugging through command snapshots
- Automatic retries of assertions and commands
- Network stubbing and interception
- Component testing for React, Vue, Angular and Svelte
- Cypress Cloud for parallelization and analytics
Typical workflows
- Debug a failing end-to-end test step by step in the runner
- Stub API responses to test UI states
- Parallelize a suite across CI machines with Cypress Cloud
Strengths
- Approachable debugging experience
- Open-source runner under the MIT license
- Component testing in the same tool
Limitations
- Single tab and limited multi-origin support
- JavaScript and TypeScript only
- Parallelization and analytics tied to a commercial service
- WebKit support is experimental
Prerequisites
- Node.js; optional Cypress Cloud account
Who it is for
- Front-end teams
- QA engineers who favor interactive debugging
Alternatives & comparison
Playwright drives browsers from outside the page, supports WebKit, Firefox and Chromium equally, offers multiple language bindings and parallelizes locally without a paid service; Cypress counters with its in-browser runner and guided debugging. Puppeteer is a lower-level Chromium automation library without a test runner.
