Overview

Bright Data (formerly Luminati Networks) is a large commercial provider of web-data infrastructure. Its foundation is a set of proxy networks (residential, datacenter, ISP and mobile) with routing tools; on top of them it sells a Web Unlocker API that returns pages from protected sites, a SERP API for structured search results, a Browser API that provides remote browsers for Playwright or Puppeteer scripts, Scraper APIs with pre-built collectors for many popular sites, a Scraper Studio for custom collectors, and a marketplace of ready-made datasets. Newer offerings include an MCP server and CLI that let LLM agents fetch live web content, and managed data-collection services.

Access is through a REST API with bearer tokens and SDKs for Python and JavaScript. Pricing is largely usage-based with a free monthly credit allowance, separate plans per proxy network, per-record dataset and scraper pricing, and custom enterprise agreements.

Bright Data targets enterprises and data teams that need scale and reliability on difficult sites. It is proprietary and comparatively complex to navigate given the number of products, costs for residential traffic can be significant, and the ethics and legality of proxy-based collection depend on the use case and jurisdiction.

Capabilities

  • Residential, datacenter, ISP and mobile proxy networks
  • Web Unlocker for protected pages
  • SERP API returning structured search results
  • Remote Browser API for Playwright and Puppeteer
  • Pre-built Scraper APIs and custom Scraper Studio
  • Dataset marketplace and web archive snapshots
  • MCP server and CLI for agents

Typical workflows

  1. Route a crawler through rotating residential IPs
  2. Pull structured search results at scale
  3. Buy a ready-made dataset instead of crawling
  4. Give an agent live page access via MCP

Strengths

  • Very large proxy pool and site coverage
  • Many access modes from raw proxies to finished datasets
  • Enterprise support and managed services

Limitations

  • Proprietary and complex product catalog
  • Residential traffic costs add up quickly
  • Legal and ethical considerations for proxy-based collection

Prerequisites
